American neuroscience in the twentieth century : confluence of the neural, behavioral, and communicative streams
The three component sciences were first developed primarily in northern Europe, says Magoun (1907-91), and spread westward to England, the eastern seaboard of North America, the American Midwest, and the West. He also identifies an unrecognized contribution from China. The American innovation was to combine them into an integrated neuroscience that he considers one of the most significant developments in the life and health sciences. Nevertheless, he traces the development of the three separately through the 20th century. Marshall (brain research, U. of California-Los Angeles), a departmental colleague, assembled the manuscript he left. Annotation (c)2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com).
